Volunteers will be staying with Kenyan families that we call “homestay.” All our homestays have been vetted and proven to be safe for volunteers. Homestays gives you an opportunity to learn about the culture at first hand. Volunteers should expect to share rooms from four volunteers per room and above of same gender. Rooms consist of single beds and bunk beds. Beddings are provided. You can as well ask for private rooms for exclusive space and provide you with privacy, comfort and convenience for an extra fee. Most homestays will have electricity and running water, except Maasai placement. Volunteers should expect some days without running water or electricity. After all, it is Africa! At some point volunteers might use bucket shower depending on homestay.
As stated, volunteers in the Massai placement should expect not to have electricity or running water. Bucket shower is an order of the day and squat toilets. These experiences will provide you an idea of how an everyday African lives. You will be able to go home and say, “I know Africa!”
Kenya is one of the most diverse countries in all of Africa. Because of the variety of tribes and ethnicities, Kenya has variety of foods. Lunch consists of rice with vegetables or beans. Dinner consists of Kenyan food such as ugali, chapati, vegetables, rice, and sometimes meat. If you are not returning to your homestay for lunch, be sure to pack your lunch in the morning. Bottle water is available at $5 USD per litre.
