Get ready!

Time to pack for your trip and we will support you every step of the way through your experience with us!

Accommodation

Volunteers will be staying with Kenyan families that we call "homestays." All our homestays have been thoroughly assessed and proven to be safe for volunteers.

  • Homestays give you an opportunity to learn about the Kenyan culture first hand. Volunteers should expect to potentially share rooms with other volunteers of same gender. Rooms consist of single beds and bunk beds. Bedding is provided.
  • You can request private rooms to provide you with more privacy, comfort and convenience for an extra fee.
  • Volunteers should expect some days without running water or electricity. After all, it is Africa!
  • Most homestays will have electricity and running water, except programmes located in the Maasai.
  • As stated, volunteers in the Maasai placement should expect not to have electricity or running water. Bucket showers are the order of the day and squat lavatories. These experiences will provide you with an idea of how an African lives. You will be able to go home and say, "I know Africa!"

Meals

Kenya is one of the most diverse countries in Africa with a wide variety of tribes and ethnicities contributing to its rich culinary landscape. Volunteers will receive three meals a day - breakfast, lunch and dinner - at their homestays.

  • For breakfast, you can expect chai (tea), mandazi (fried dough), fruit, or toast.
  • Lunch typically includes rice with vegetables or beans, while dinner features traditional Kenyan dishes such as ugali, chapati, vegetables, rice and occasionally meat.
  • If you won't be returning to your homestay for lunch, be sure to pack your meal in the morning.
  • Bottled water is available for $5 USD per litre, (as you can only drink bottled water in Kenya).
  • If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know in advance so we can prepare accordingly.
Visa

Everyone is required to obtain a visa in advance to enter Kenya.

How to apply:
  • Currently Kenya requires all visitors to obtain a visa online through their e-visa system. The e-visa is issued by the Department of Immigration Services for a small fee. Once issued, the e-visa must be used within three months, so it is important to apply for it within that timeframe before your departure.
  • It's recommended to apply for your visa at least 7 days in advance, and you can stay in Kenya for a maximum of 90 days.
  • All visitors must also hold a passport that is valid for at least six months.
Orientation

Our orientation will take place the day after your arrival with our local team in Kenya. During this session, you will receive important information about your programme and life in Kenya. We will also provide guidelines to help you adjust to the country while prioritising your safety.

Arrival and airport pick up

When booking your flight, please ensure you arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. One of our team members will be waiting for you to drive you to your homestay, so make sure to send us your flight details.
